AMAZON — The native tribes of the Amazon are celebrating Fishing Week, and everyone is welcome to participate.

Organized by the Tapirape tribe, Fishing Week will honor all things related to fish, up to an including blue and yellow fish.

The event, however, is not related to Shark Week. It is also not connected with the fact Neptune is currently transitioning the astrological sign of Pisces, though it probably should be.

The fun begins on Monday, Sept. 7, at 10:30 a.m. (All times are SLT.) The Tapis will travel to Turtle Beach by boat, or possibly swimming like fish. On the beach, they will erect a sacred camp, where all the Fishing Week activities will be held. That will be followed by the Ritual of the Blessing of the Waters at 11 a.m.

The reason for the ritual is that Tapis believe, before each hunt or fishing activity, a qualified shaman must communicate with the creatures of the sea or forest to ask permission and protection during the activity. These would be the creatures that will be gutted and eaten later that day. If this is not done, the Tapis believe, they risk having serious accidents during the period of hunt of fishing

That will be followed by an orgy wild party at 11:30.

All day, throughout the week, natives and their friends will be cooking, selling, and preparing fish stew and fish-related products at the sacred Fishing Camp on Turtle Beach.

The events continue on Tuesday. At 11 a.m., when there will be a shaman ritual for protection to awake the power of the animal in each Tapi.

On Wednesday, at 11 a.m., there will be a fishing contest, with prizes for the one who catches the most blue fishes. That will be followed at 12:30 p.m. with story telling. On Thursday, story telling will begin at 10 a.m.

On Friday, a woman will make body paint and people will be tattooed, probably with their consent. At 11 a.m., there will be the Anaconda’s Party in Rio Tapajos.

The fun continues on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m., when the Tapis welcome all other tribes to their sacred Fishing Camp. They will share food and dance around the fire.

That will be followed by the Ayahuasca Ritual at 11 a.m. A shaman will get into a trance using powerful hallucinogens, which the shaman believes allows him or her to communicate with the spirit world. People will be able to ask questions and the shaman will divine answers from the whispers of the spirits.

On Sunday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m., the Tapis will hold the Ritual of the Waters and Nature. A shaman with the tribe will thank the sea for the protection and for the food they got. Flowers and palm leaves will be thrown into the sea, thus bringing Fishing Week to a close.

On Monday, Sept. 14, the Tapis will return to their camp near the Love Temple, after cleaning up the fish bones, dirty dishes, and used condoms.
