AMAZON — Sometimes it may seem as if the Amazon is to forever be a primitive backwater devoid of industry and progress. But the generosity of Dylan and Eve Heartsong is stepping in to take the jungle a step forward.

Utilizing resources from their various business ventures and public funding, the Red Republic founders built roads and housing for some of the many, many poor people of the jungle. They call this thriving subdivision Libertad. It is located just north of Gullivant’s Clearing.

“It is my goal as president of the Red Republic to see to it that whether our citizens were born here or migrated here, they get to live in a thriving and prosperous community,” said President Dylan Heartsong during a ribbon cutting ceremony on the site of the new development.

The president said, in addition to the dirt roads and tarpaper housing, they are planning to install indoor plumbing soon. Many of the residents rarely take baths, so the plumbing initiative will be a benefit to those who have to walk through the project.

One disadvantaged man, whose miserable life in poverty has been somewhat improved by the housing granted him in Libertad, said he was looking forward to using a real toilet.

“Well, we just been using that hole in the back of the house, but I suppose I could try a toilet,” the man said. Due to the shame he feels for being so poor he asked that his name not be used.

First Lady Eve Heartsong said that, despite being full of poor people who tend to commit a lot of crimes, the crime rates in Libertad have thus far been very low.

“Only the occasional assaults. Those are mainly around Tantrica's lot. We're working on that, but its a slow process,” Eve Heartsong said, referring to one of Libertad’s impoverished residents, who is also a convicted sex offender.

Eve said even a violent sex offender like Tantrica, who is clearly a threat to all the other residents, will be considered for housing, as the Red Republic is trying to be as inclusive as possible.

“We intend to raise the quality of life, not just for ourselves, as the ruling class of Red Republic, but for all of its citizens. Even the delinquent ones,” the first lady said.

Currently, there is a two-year waiting list for any poor people who want a place to live in Libertad.

Besides giving poor people a small piece of hope to turn around their miserable lives, the Heartsongs are teaching them how democracy works by making the community self-governed.

President Hearstong authorized the forming of a charter for the Town Council of Libertad.

“It will be good for the community to get involved in what we are doing to better the amazon,” President Heartsong said.

Anyone interest in joining the council may get further information from the president’s administrative assistant, Maria, who is available at the Libertad City Hall near Gullivant’s Clearing.

The president added that they are working on a pledge of allegiance as well as a fair tax structure to ensure the sustainability of the Red Republic’s noble philanthropy.

Anyone wishing to donate to this great cause can do so by stopping by the offices of the Red Coast Resort.
