AI Guidelines for Amazon River
Amazon River is, first and foremost, a roleplay community.
What makes the place interesting is the interaction between the people behind the avatars: their ideas, their humor, their reactions, their stories, and the unexpected things that happen when people play together.
AI can be useful, and we are not banning it. But we do want to be clear about where it fits into Amazon River — and where it does not.
AI as a Tool is Fine
Using AI as a supporting tool is perfectly acceptable, for example:
for translations or language assistance;
for creating pictograms, symbols, or simple graphic elements;
for posters, signs, or illustrations that are clearly intended to look like drawings, paintings, comics, stylized artwork, or abstract designs;
for technical or organizational help.
In other words: AI can help you create things.
AI Should Not Replace You
What we do not want is AI being used to replace personal interaction.
Please do not use AI in casual chat or roleplay to generate your supposedly personal emotes, reactions, feelings, dialogue, or responses.
If someone talks to you in Amazon, they should be talking to you.
Roleplay does not have to be perfect, beautifully written, or grammatically flawless. A spontaneous response written by a real person is much more in the spirit of Amazon River than a polished paragraph generated by an AI.
No AI-Generated “Real People”
We also do not want photorealistic AI-generated images or videos that attempt to turn Second Life into fake real-life photography.
This includes things such as:
completely AI-generated “photographs” of people;
photorealistic AI-generated or AI-altered videos;
turning an SL avatar into an apparently real human being;
taking a picture of an SL avatar and using AI to morph it into a realistic person standing in a realistic real-world environment.
Clearly artistic interpretations are different.
Turning your avatar into a painting, illustration, comic, sketch, fantasy artwork, or another obviously stylized image is absolutely fine.
The distinction is simple: artistic interpretation is welcome; fake photography is not.
An Exception: Actual Bots
There is one important exception.
If you deliberately create a bot that is clearly presented as a bot, using an LLM to give that character intelligent conversation is allowed.
For example, this could be:
an NPC or guide used as part of a quest;
an interactive character at an event;
a talking oracle, merchant, creature, or storyteller;
a fun AI attraction at a fair or sideshow;
another clearly artificial character designed as part of the experience.
In this case, AI is not pretending to be the person behind an avatar. The AI itself is part of the game.
That distinction matters.
The Simple Rule
Use AI as a tool, not as a substitute for yourself.
Amazon River is about roleplay, creativity, spontaneity, personality, and people interacting with people.
We would like to keep it that way.
